Chris Cole is the 2009 Thrasher Skater of the Year. He and Danny Way are the only people to repeat…ever. There’s nothing more to say, I’ll let Phelps handle it.

An Inspirational Art Exhibit By Photographer Ian Ruhter

For those of you who have heard of Ian Ruhter, you know that he is an amazing and talented photographer whose work has been featured on countless magazine covers and campaigns throughout the world. I first recognized him through his work in Transworld Snowboarding and the incredible shots that he captured. For those of you who don’t know who he is, well, I just told you BUT you have an opportunity to experience something completely unique and thoughtful three years in the making from Ian.

Thursday, December 10th Ian Ruhter will be displaying the “Enabled Project” in downtown Los Angeles. This project “tells the stories of 9 athletes who overcame unimaginable obstacles in their lives by making the decision to never give up; and to keep their dreams alive, even when they were the only ones who believed they were achievable” (www.enabledproject.com). Speechless yet? Ian met one stranger with one powerful story that inspired him to begin this incredible journey.

The Enabled Project seeks to point out the ambiguity of the term, “disabled” through each of these unbelievable and exceptional individuals that were deemed by society as disabled. It consists of a documentary which will tell the stories as if they were one person, a book that focuses on each individual’s personal story and an art exhibit displaying photography and video that shows the making of the exhibit.

I can not even imagine how amazing and inspiring this exhibit will be. The show will be traveling the nation so if you can’t make it to Los Angeles for this one, be sure to stay informed about where Ian is going to take the Enabled Project through his website and the Enabled website. There is a ton of information about this show so be sure and click HERE.

“I am sharing this work because I want to inspire people with the determination and courage that these athletes have, and remind us that we are enabled beyond measure, no matter what our circumstances may be.” – Ian Ruhter

Werd Life Has Some New Videos

Posted on December 9, 2009 with Comments Off

Geoff Rowley, Mark Appleyard and Todd Bratrud, aka Werd Life, have some new stuff over at their site www.werdlife.com. It’s basically Rowley and Appleyard that handle the skateboarding and killer travel photography (and with Rowley killer is literal, becasue he’s been killing some shit lately), and Bratrud handles the art. They put some new videos up, and if you keep refreshing the opening photo it will keep changing, revealing a cool set of photos. And for all you ladies out there, one of the video features Rowley’s bum. That’s what they say in England right?

The Blur Skates In His New Shoe

Posted on December 9, 2009 with Comments Off

Dennis Busenitz is hands down one of my favorite skaters to watch. He just skates so fast and fluid, whether he’s in a park or just cruising the streets, he uses his environment perfectly, letting nothing go waste. I can’t harp on it enough, the guys that skate fast: Mariano, Trujillo, Reynolds, etc. Those guys just make skateboarding look so appealing to the eye, it just paints a nice picture of what street skateboarding really is. And Busenitz is the fastest, it’s like art, the way he uses the streets of San Francisco as his own personal skate world. Plus, he’s got everything. A month or so back he and Chris Cole gave us an amazing display of technical skateboarding, when they went trick for trick in the best game of skate I’ve ever witnessed, over at The Berrics.

That brings me to this here video below. Adidas decided it was time to make a shoe designed to keep up with the blur that Dennis Busenitz is. They take you through the whole process of designing a signature skate shoe, and there is plenty of skateboarding. That’s how they test the shoes you know. Pay attention to the part when he cruising through traffic in S.F. He ollies a fucking trailer being pulled by a truck in traffic; gnar. Check it out below:

Skateboarding Gets Involved On World AIDS Day

Posted on December 9, 2009 with Comments Off

Just in case you didn’t know today was World AIDS Day, and the nice folks over at Crailtap (Girl, Chocolate, Fourstar, Skate Mental, Royal) once again showed their support with a complete site takeover by (RED), a charity that helps the AIDS epidemic in Africa. The Girl skatepark also was taken over by (RED), and literally, seen in the photo above. If you want to learn more about this organization, and how you can help. I did a story on it a month or so ago here.

I started my Wold AIDS Day off where I usually do; Starbucks. And if you bought an Americano today (a drink made of espresso shots and water) Starbucks would donate 5 cents to the World AIDS Fund, so I bought two with my (Starbucks) RED card, which also donates 5 cents per purchase. That’s 20 cents, every bit counts, and if all the Starbucks drones I see there every morning in whatever town I happen to be in did the same, it would’ve added up.

Anyway, not to sound like some righteous asshole, I just think what the Crail guys are doing over there is rad; it’s shedding light on a problem, and getting people involved. I found out about it through them, and do my best to pass it on. They also announced today that the (RED) skater this year is going to be Anthony Pappalardo, and for the first time the limited edition pro-model decks are not going to be Girl, but Chocolate. So, stay tuned for that, and more from me about the goings on, on World AIDS Day.

Endemic Launch Party Hits Venice Beach

Posted on December 9, 2009 with Comments Off

Partying in Venice Beach is always fun. The place has such a perfect balance of flavors and people. There are smelly bums to accent the beautiful architecture along the gorgeous canals. Its ghetto, yet hip and nice at the same time. There are hot girls everywhere, but none of that stuck up hollywood type. Its artsy, its young, its weird. I cant get enough of it.

So when I got a call from Derek, one of Endemic’s Founders, about their launch party in Venice, I was already there before he asked me if i could make it. Endemic Clothing is a brand new company, born in Venice, and they are already creating quite a name for themselves in the Los Angeles scene. They support riders of all kinds, blending art and style with environmental awareness in mind. Their new website is pretty sick, click-> endemicagenda.com. The event went down at the AC Supper Club, which is an awesome venue for a party. There were all sorts of delights for the eyes and ears. Seattle’s Tulsi came out with some beats and rhymes to get the crowd moving. Stevie starlight closed the night, rocking into the wee hours. Things started to get blurry around the time Stevie was grinding his 73rd face melting guitar solo, but judging by my hangover the next day, the party was freaking epic. Check out the interview with Derek from Endemic below… Expect big things from these guys…
